Let Nature’s Scents And Beauty Lift Your Mood

Let Nature’s Scents And Beauty Lift Your Mood

Juliana Sim, 24 Saturn Life Stylist.    February 17, 2017

At some point in time we feel overwhelmed and stressed out. Yes, urban life can be stressful and hard to manage at times. We always seem to be looking for ways to relieve our stress and better our mood.

Nature offers a simple solution to improving one’s emotional health and that’s through flowers! Not only does being in the presence of flowers trigger happy emotions and heighten feelings of satisfaction, flowers and their scents bring about feelings of calmness and tranquillity too! In a study done by a team of researchers at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, it was proven that flowers have a positive effect on peoples’ moods.

I especially love how some of our natural body scrubs like Scrub Medium not only renews my skin for a fresher, smoother look by removing dead skin, it is scented with spearmint essential oil! This sweet, minty and natural fragrance is used as aromatherapy to relieve headaches, stress and fatigue! Scrub Lite is scented with lemongrass essential oil to ward off insects and refresh the mind and body.

Our Relaxed Shower gel is scented with lavender essential oil which is most commonly known for its relaxing effects on the body.

So the next time you feel stressed or just tired from a long day at work, don’t reach out for snacks or alcohol, try our version of “Plant Therapy” and indulge your weary souls and it will help make “scents” (sense) of this busy world we live in.

How To: Green Therapy

How To: Green Therapy

Juliana Sim, 24 Saturn Life Stylist.    February 16, 2017

According to Colour Therapy experts, green relates to the heart. Green is also a balancing colour and brings about an aura of harmony and a love of nature and self. All these positive descriptions easily make me green with envy (pun intended)! So how does one “Green Therapy?” We can start by “Seeing Green!” Surround yourself with green. At home, you can create windowsill gardens, balcony gardens and herb gardens to create your own green space to hide away or just a place to renew your spirits.

Windowsill gardens are the perfect solution to short-of-space homes. Create a garden where you never knew you had room for one. I find the following article on the ‘Better Homes and Gardens’ website very informative and helpful in guiding a first-time windowsill gardener http://www.bhg.com/gardening/houseplants/projects/windowsill-gardens/

On our Facebook page, we have also shared an article on how to set up a home garden in your balcony. It may turn out to be the best therapy you have ever experienced! Sowing these seeds, watching over the young seedlings and finally tasting the fruits of your labour!

If you think a garden is too big a commitment, we have ideas for your coffee table too.

At the office, see green with cacti and other succulents which will thrive nicely in the adverse conditions of an office environment http://homeguides.sfgate.com/type-cactus-desk-92315.html

Which brings me to another point – HOW TO: GREEN THERAPY for our skin!

Green is about harmony and is a balancing colour. It is about loving and nurturing ourselves. I have learned to rely on the same theory in skin care too. I want to ensure that my skin benefits from natural ingredients, real vitamins and less fillers. That’s why I love using the 24 Saturn Vitamin Boost which has an optimal 10% pharmaceutical grade pure vitamin C and natural antioxidants to neutralize skin damaging free radicals formed in the skin every day. Skin collagen is boosted and cells repaired. I use Matte Hydrate in the day which keeps my skin grease-free and hydrated. I appreciate that pure hyaluronic acid (known to attract up to 1,000 times its weight in water) is the main ingredient.

And at the end of each day, enjoy Green Therapy with a walk in the park or the neighbourhood garden. Interestingly, a recent study found that more than 70% of adults who participated in “Green Therapy” had a lower risk of depression than those who were window shopping at a local shopping centre. Approximately 71% of individuals reported that they felt less tense after a “Green Walk” while 50% of individuals reported that their feelings of tension increased after walking through a shopping centre.

Walking, breathing in fresh air and simply just getting one’s breathing rhythm in sync may truly be the escape and therapy that city dwellers need, an antidote to the stresses of urban life.

My Big Frustration Led To a Business

My Big Frustration Led To a Business

Sarah, Editor.    November 02, 2016

I’m a typical millennial, a go-getter, active on social media and a hustler. I graduated with a Law degree with honors from the UK and worked with lawyers, sales and marketing teams in big multinational companies, managing business contracts. This is probably why I am so opinionated about everything.

I’ve always wanted better skin so I can look dewy with a natural and smooth glow without any effort at all. The products that work really well for me to give me the glow I’ve been after are serums from my chemist friend. Her labs make these awesome serums for dermatologists in Singapore and Malaysia who prescribe them to their patients. She taught me about efficacy, combination and percentages of active ingredients. What to look out for, why they work for skin etc. I also had passionate discussions with a fellow skincare entrepreneur who introduced me to skin nutrition and why she believes in it to slow down skin aging.

I looked at all my favorite natural skincare brands and realized that they have not innovated in probably a decade and their products never seemed to work for me because they were mostly products with fillers. I was essentially paying alot for a pretty jar with useless fillers. I also learned that cleansing alone doesn’t keep skin healthy and it alone will not give me the dewy glow I am after. Cleansing just preps the skin to absorb nutrients better. I need to feed my skin to replenish lost nutrients and for this, I need proper skin nutrition, not plain creams and gels.

I love body scrubs and it was difficult to find one in Singapore that wasn’t full of cream or gel. I thought, how about some proper scrubs with dense granules and plant oils for once?

I figured, I’ve waited long enough for the big brands to come up with more nutritious skincare at mid range prices. I felt like they were charging me more for advertising rather than innovating.

The 24 Saturn range is nutrient-rich, non-comedogenic skincare for better skin health. Our Facial Detox is a reliable way to replenish lost nutrients day and night. Our soaps are infused with nutritious plant oils and scented with natural essential oil.

UV rays and environmental factors cause our skin to produce free radicals which damage cells, collagen and hyaluronic acid on a daily basis. As we age, our skin produces less collagen and hyaluronic acid to repair itself and hydrate. If we boost our skin with antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E, they neutralize free radicals which minimizes cell damage and boosts collagen production. Your skin becomes clearer. If you apply hyaluronic acid to your skin to replenish what’s depleted, your skin will be hydrated from within and will stay hydrated without any greasy shine whether in dry or humid weather.

You have to remember though, you need about 10% concentration of vitamin C in any vitamin C skincare product for the vitamin C to give results. Safe to say, this is what our serum’s concentration is.

So this is 24 Saturn, looking after your skin’s health through better skin nutrition. Replenish, nourish and hydrate.

I discovered a local soap artisan who makes really beautiful soaps with nourishing ingredients that give an amazing smooth lather with no dry feeling after. Check out our premium handmade soap selection to see her beautiful creations.

Do Local Brands Deserve Your Love?

Do Local Brands Deserve Your Love?

Sarah, Editor.    January 26, 2017

If you believe that local products should be cheap and don’t deserve to be priced higher – You should reconsider this notion. Many people are willing to pay a premium for imported goods even if the same thing is sold by a local brand. Here’s what you’re essentially paying for, using the example of a bar of soap:

With $15 – $20, you can buy a local branded soap from a specialist artisan made with premium ingredients or an imported bar of soap of acceptable but not premium quality. How is this so? Consider the middle men, shipping, customs and other expenses involved in bringing the imported soap to you. The $20 is diluted and what you’re essentially paying for is a soap that’s worth $5 of $5 quality. If you bought local, your $20 goes to the artisan, sometimes a middle man and the rest of the money goes into premium ingredients to bring you a premium product.

So! What I’m getting at is this: Would you want to pay an inflated amount for a product that isn’t worth that or would you want to get more value for your money by enjoying a premium local product?

We vet our artisans and chemists and we ensure that they create premium products with premium ingredients so that our customers get the best value for their money. No doubt our products aren’t cheap, but you can be sure that if you wanted to buy an imported product of the same quality, it’ll cost much more.

Collagen College

Collagen College

Sarah, Editor.    November 12, 2016

After reading this, you’ll pay more attention to collagen. I feel that more people should know more about this protein our body produces naturally and so I’m going to give a quick rundown on this.

Collagen is produced by the body and is a protein in our connective tissue that makes our skin elastic and youthful (Among other things). UV rays and environmental factors form free radicals in the skin that destroy cells and collagen. As we age, our skin doesn’t produce as much collagen as it did before and our skin starts to look dry, wrinkled, saggy and dull.

Will drinking collagen help replace collagen? There’s a science behind the efficacy of this, meaning there has to be a certain percentage of collagen to be consumed per day in order for it to be effective. Not every collagen drink is for real.

So what else can you do? Vitamin E and vitamin C are excellent antioxidants. This means that they neutralize the cell and collagen damaging free radicals in your skin. This actually boosts collagen production making your skin tighter, plumper, more elastic and clear. Such antioxidants are best delivered when they penetrate the skin through a serum. For vitamin C to be effective in a serum, you need about a 10% concentration.

The fact is, this will help your skin look fresher and clearer and you’ll find less need to put on make up. Who doesn’t dream of this?

Check out our VITAMIN BOOST night serum that gives your skin an antioxidant boost overnight to repair cells and boost collagen. Best of all, this serum gives you the optimal 10% vitamin C concentration.

Benefits Of Becoming A Conscious Consumer

Benefits Of Becoming A Conscious Consumer

Sarah, Editor.    November 01, 2016

When it comes to skincare, although you can’t go wrong with natural ingredients, not all natural ingredients are going to give you a desired effect. Having the right combination and quantity determines efficacy. Grinding an apple into a pulp and spreading it on your face and calling it a face mask isn’t going to do anything for you.

A “Triple Berry” antioxidant exfoliating face mask with seeds may sound very attractive, but a touch of berry essence isn’t exactly going to give your skin antioxidant effects although eating a ton of berries would. Vitamin E and vitamin C are known skin antioxidants and even so, a skincare product has to have a concentration of 10% vitamin C to be effective.

Microbeads in your exfoliating products are not biodegradable and are polluting the oceans, they are banned in the US and the UK. Use a biodegradable exfoliant like salt and sugar.

It’s never bad to become a conscious consumer.

Tons of brands out there belong to just a handful of conglomerates that monopolize a certain industry. This means millions are spent every year trying to reach consumers through advertising, hoping to stay relevant and provoke brand recall.

When a product is being hyped up with a multi million dollar marketing budget, does it mean it’s good for you?

I’m beginning to see that people are numb to the hype and preferring to do their own research online or buying products because of a personal recommendation from a friend. The benefit of being a conscious consumer is knowing what works and what doesn’t. Sure, it takes a little homework to get familiar with something you don’t normally get familiar with but when it comes to your health, it’s something worth studying for.
